I do a lot of work out in the backyard. So far it doesn't look like much, but hey, I get exercise and it is rewarding in other ways.

It looks like you spend a lot of time int he back yard. I have always wanted some form of water works in one of my gardens, whether I put it in for other people or just for me, when I have a yard lol. It looks like a wonderful place to just sit and relax.

I have dug that pond about three times. The first time we had a preformed liner. Water shot out from the fountain, crept under the liner, and buoyed it up like a boat with the poor fish flopping around in a puddle. I was out at 6 am in the dark in a t-shirt and little else, catching my poor fish and putting them in a tub of water!

We dug the pond a bit deeper and used the liner that is more like a big tarp...hah...and that worked for about a year before water got underneath the liner and also buoyed it up.

So early spring of this year I got in there once again and dug it even larger. This time we put down two layers of that weed cloth as cushion, and I felt around for hard stones. Then we put in the pond liner and so far it is working well.

However...

I need to redo it a fourth time, or at least dig a second pond with a canal connecting them...because it is not quite deep enough for koi in winter. This pond is only 2 feet deep. Koi need at least 3 feet in order to survive very well, as I understand it.

Yes, back yard ponds are totally epic!

Well I have never had to work on a man made pond but I have had to drain my parents farm pond and then dig it out lol almost 4 feet of silty, sticky, blue clay. They also have a spring which they acquire their water. No not a well, it is a spring there was no drilling involved to reach the water. The spring needs to be cleaned out every year. We are going to do it some time soon, so if you feel like broadening your horizons on cleaning out water works, we would never turn down a helping hand :-P

Lol, I had to dig my pond out of dry, rock-hard red clay. Our entire back yard is maid of the stuff, thus the raised garden. A spring, eh? Wonder if there are salamanders in it.

Eventually, I will find an affordable house with a big backyard.. Someday... And when I do, I think I'll hire both of you two to do my landscaping and build a pond for me. Wink
