2011 Jungle Carpet Clutch (surprise!) lol

Apparently, the smaller of my two female jungle carpets was gravid! She's a small-bodied jungle and I never noticed any signs that would lead me to believe there were eggs in there. She ate normally with the other two up until the last feeding. I was about to feed them today and noticed that she was in the corner of the cage with two eggs! By the time I got a tub ready for her there were two more! I don't know if she was finished when I moved her and her clutch over to the rack, but it would seem that I may have some jungle carpet babies on the way.

Dang Sandy! You are going to have your hands full!

How much will they cost?

I'm not sure yet. The female has no interest in brooding the clutch so they're going to be moved to our hovabator incubator now that I've found and dug it out of a pile of junk in the back room. I don't want to get any hopes up too high on this clutch. It was entirely unexpected and the eggs are on the small side. There are 9 eggs and 1 slug. Of the nine "good" eggs there are two or three that seem rather iffy with very small/weak veins.

I'll keep watch over them and let you know how it goes.

Remember I got first dibs on a male and a female lol

Okay, so this is my "uh-oh" clutch. All nine eggs appear to be healthy. What I originally thought might be infertile eggs do have very small veins if you look closely. There is no guarantee that they will all make it to hatching, but I'm not throwing any of them out unless they start to smell.

when in doubt, INCUBATEEEEEEEE. Dang, I wish i had room for a JCP. If i can get rid of the corn....

eric your wife would freak if you brought home a jcp . sandy if there is a pretty female baby i might get her and not the big girl or the big girl later lol however i am pretty stoked about the big girl.

Well, I lost two of the 9, but they were iffy from the get go with really weak veins. I've got another egg that somehow managed to get punctured a few days ago but I put a scrap of paper towel and thin layer of super glue over it and it seems to be fine now. So long as no other mishaps befall this clutch, I should have 7 babies sometime early in August.

well Im clearing out almost all of my Leos except for a 1.2 pair im breeding next year. Im in the process of obtaining more Pacman frogs and going to try my luck with them. I want something challenging.

So you never know, a JCP may be in my future... lol

I don't know about that. In all likelihood, I'll probably only sell a few of these and be stuck with the rest until I have to wholesale them to one of the local stores or maybe my rat guy since he sometimes supplies other shops here and in North Carolina with things besides feeder animals/bugs.

A second egg pipped and the baby has some crazy huge eyes. I'm thinking s/he may have had more direct heat during incubation and this was the result. It seems healthy otherwise but I won't know for sure until it actually leaves its egg. I slit the rest to check for any other oddballs and I'm afraid some of these eggs may not have made it. The babies in the eggs look fully formed by didn't respond when touched. Guess we'll see what happens as the rest start leaving their eggs. I'll get more pics then.

Ended up with four babies. Still waiting on the last baby to leave its egg, but here's a quick pic of the three already out.




And of the baby with the buggy eyes. I'm not certain what to do with this guy. I've been reading a bit on the topic and I think it's a fluid build up but I'm not sure what causes it or what can be done about it. Guess I'll wait and see if things change after the first shed and if he can feed normally.

Well, it looks like there are two girls and two boys. Unfortunately, both of the boys have enlarged eyes.



They've still not shed yet. I'll get more/better pics once they've shed.

I know this is an ancient thread but I was wondering what you ended up doing with the two boys that had enlarged eyes?

Unfortunately, they had to be euthanized.
